๐ G’day Everyone!
A quick update on the newly released Australian Standards for warehouse operations and how they shape your inspection procedures. ๐๐ท
The Standards categorise audits into Informal inspections (Routine), Formal inspections (Expert), and post-incident inspections. Each has its unique role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of your operations. ๐๐
1๏ธ – Informal inspections: These are your daily, weekly, or monthly checks depending on operational factors.
Informal inspections should be conducted at a frequency based on the following:
- the results of a risk assessment (e.g. daily or weekly); or
- at intervals recommended by a competent person.
All visible components of the racking systems are checked, and loads are confirmed suitable for the racking design.
The best part? Your warehouse staff can do these, given the proper training.
2๏ธ – Formal inspections: Now, these are comprehensive!
A competent person shall conduct formal inspections at intervals not exceeding 12 months.
The actual frequency of formal inspections, if less than 12 months, should be based on the following:
- the results of a risk assessment, or
- the recommendation of a competent person for formal inspections.
This is someone who knows the industry standards, understands structural engineering, and can interpret the results accurately.
A competent person may include the manufacturer, supplier or racking designer.
3๏ธ – Incident inspections:Any mishap or damage? There should be an immediate check!
This one requires the expertise of a competent person to understand the extent of damage and recommend corrective measures. ๐ง
ONLY A COMPETENT PERSON SHALL UNDERTAKE REPAIRS.
Racking components shall not be repaired or modified without the approval of a competent person.
So, from regular checks to annual audits, the new Standards ensure we are always on top of our game. The focus is on proactive prevention, not just detection. Let’s embrace these changes and continue to provide safe, efficient service.
